Alexandra L. Waeffler was a founding shareholder in Nelson, Irvings & Waeffler. She, Pat Nelson, Ruth Irvings and Anne De Leo were friends since 1974 when they began their careers together at Legal Action of Wisconsin, representing low income clients. All of them came to the practice of law with a shared goal: to use the law to effect social change. At Legal Action, Alix started the Milwaukee County Elderly Legal Services Project (now known as Senior Law) and the Volunteer Lawyers Project, and for nine years served as Managing Attorney. In 1996, she joined Ruth and Pat in private practice in a small estate planning firm. In 1998, they created Nelson, Irvings & Waeffler.
In her years of private practice, Alix concentrated on issues of concern to the elderly, the disabled, and their families including special needs trusts, guardianship and probate. She was an officer of the Board of Directors of the Elder Law Section of the State Bar of Wisconsin, and past Chair of the Milwaukee Bar Association Elder Law Section. She authored the chapter on Guardianships and Conservatorships in the Methods of Practice, Fourth Edition (by Grenig, Fishbach & the Milwaukee Bar Association, Inc.). In 2005, she was the recipient of the Distinguished Pro Bono Career Award from the Volunteer Lawyers Project, sponsored by the Milwaukee Young Lawyers Association and Legal Action.
Alix died unexpectedly and suddenly in June of 2006. The Alexandra Lovejoy Waeffler Fund for Social Justice of the Greater Milwaukee Foundation has been created in her memory. We miss our dear friend and colleague greatly.
